How this calculator works
Absolute return is the total percentage gain or loss on an investment regardless of time: ((Current โ Invested) รท Invested) ร 100. CAGR converts this to an annual rate accounting for time held. True XIRR (Extended Internal Rate of Return) applies when you have multiple cash flows at different dates โ typically computed in Excel or a spreadsheet. This calculator gives the absolute return and annualised CAGR for a single lump sum, which is the most commonly needed version.
Absolute Return = ((Current Value โ Invested) รท Invested) ร 100 | CAGR = (Current รท Invested) ^ (1 รท Years) โ 1

Use CAGR to compare funds
Two funds with the same absolute return over different time periods are NOT equal. Always compare on CAGR, not absolute return.
Negative CAGR is also useful
Knowing you lost 3% p.a. (CAGR) over 5 years helps you understand the opportunity cost vs an FD returning 6โ7%.
True XIRR needs all transactions
If you did SIP or multiple investments, use a spreadsheet's XIRR function with actual dates and amounts for an accurate number.
